Abstract

The heliocentric theory, which is now widely accepted as the foundation of astronomical calculations, was initially met with strong resistance at the time of its emergence. Before heliocentrism was introduced, the geocentric theory which claimed that the Earth was the center of the solar system served as the dominant reference, particularly because it was supported by the doctrines of the Church. Historically, proponents of the heliocentric theory often faced extreme pressure from religious authorities. Those who supported this view were considered heretical, excommunicated, and even subjected to brutal punishments, such as being hanged or burned alive. Orb: On the Movements of the Earth portrays this conflict through a fictional narrative inspired by the real struggles of scientists who fought to voice scientific truth. This article examines how the anime reflects the tension between science and religious authority, while also tracing the development of the heliocentric theory from Aristarchus to the era of the Catholic Church’s dominance in Europe. Through a narrative and historical analysis, this study highlights how popular media such as anime can serve as a powerful reflective medium for understanding the dynamics between science, power, and freedom of thought.
